On cheap shared hosting, somebody may update everything directly on the live website and hope nothing breaks.
That is not how an important website should be managed.
With a proper Drupal workflow, you can:

The downside
Pantheon is not the cheapest option.

2. Acquia Cloud Platform — Best for Enterprise Drupal
Best for: universities, government sites, large corporations, healthcare organizations and high-traffic Drupal installations.
If Pantheon feels like Drupal hosting built for professional development teams, Acquia feels like Drupal hosting built for organizations where the website itself is critical infrastructure.
Acquia has extremely deep ties to Drupal and its Cloud Platform is specifically designed for Drupal applications.
The platform includes things such as:
- managed Drupal infrastructure
- development, staging and production workflows
- global CDN
- monitoring
- automated deployment tools
- search services
- enterprise security options
- high-availability infrastructure
- compliance-focused features
Acquia describes Cloud Platform as a managed PaaS specifically for Drupal applications, with different service tiers depending on the organization’s requirements.
Its platform also supports developer workflows, monitoring, CDN functionality and Drupal-focused search services.
Where Acquia makes sense
Suppose you’re running:
- a university website with hundreds of departments
- a government portal
- a large publishing network
- an international company with dozens of regional websites
Your requirements are no longer simply:
“Will Drupal install?”
You start caring about:
- uptime agreements
- redundancy
- deployment processes
- compliance
- team permissions
- auditability
- security response
- multisite management

That is the territory where Acquia becomes interesting.
Acquia advertises enterprise security and compliance capabilities including options relating to FedRAMP, PCI and HIPAA environments.
The downside
Acquia would be overkill for many small websites.

My verdict
My first choice for enterprise Drupal where budget is secondary to reliability, workflow and support.
3. Platform.sh / Upsun — Best for Developers
Best for: development teams, complex Drupal applications, APIs and projects involving multiple technologies.
Platform.sh has long been popular with development teams because the infrastructure itself can become part of your development workflow.
The Platform.sh console has been transitioning under the Upsun brand, so don’t be surprised if you encounter both names while researching it.
What makes this platform interesting is its environment-based approach.
A project can have isolated environments connected to branches in your Git workflow.

A developer can work on a feature without everybody fighting over one staging server.

That becomes powerful when you are dealing with:

Cloudways occupies an interesting middle ground.
It doesn’t specialize exclusively in Drupal like Pantheon or Acquia, but it provides managed cloud servers capable of running Drupal.
Instead of maintaining Linux, Nginx, PHP, databases, firewalls and backups completely by yourself, Cloudways manages much of the server layer.
Its Drupal environment supports technologies such as:
- Nginx
- Apache
- PHP-FPM
- Redis
- Memcached
- Varnish
- SSL
- server-level firewalling
- automated backups
- Git
- Composer
- Drush
Cloudways currently explains that Drupal can be deployed through its PHP application stack, with Composer available for installation.
This is an important distinction:
Cloudways isn’t Drupal-only hosting.
You’re getting managed cloud infrastructure capable of running Drupal.
Why I would choose Cloudways
For many small agencies, a Drupal-specific enterprise platform may simply cost more than the project requires.
Cloudways gives you a nice compromise between:
cheap shared hosting
and
expensive enterprise Drupal infrastructure.
You get significantly more server flexibility while avoiding much of the system administration required with a raw VPS.
One thing I would verify before buying
Always confirm that the PHP version offered by the server matches your particular Drupal release.

5. A Well-Configured VPS — Best for Maximum Control
This isn’t a hosting company.
That is deliberate.
Sometimes the best Drupal hosting isn’t a pre-packaged Drupal plan at all.
An experienced system administrator can run Drupal extremely well on a VPS from providers such as DigitalOcean, Linode/Akamai, Vultr, AWS or Google Cloud.
You could configure something like:

With enough traffic, you could separate the database, add load balancers and introduce additional caching.
Advantages
You control almost everything:

And the raw infrastructure can often be relatively inexpensive.
But there is a catch
You are the managed hosting company.
When PHP stops responding at 3:17 AM, you fix it.
When the database fills the disk, you fix it.
When a security patch is released, you install it.
When backups fail, you discover why.
That’s why I don’t automatically recommend unmanaged VPS hosting simply because the monthly price looks cheap.
Your time also has a price.
What Drupal Actually Requires From a Host

Composer and SSH Are No Longer “Developer Extras”
For a modern Drupal project, I consider these essential:
SSH access
and
Composer support.
Drupal’s own hosting guidance for small and medium projects notes that command-line access for Composer is required and describes Drush as an important part of the workflow.
So if a host advertises:
“1-click Drupal installation!”
but doesn’t give you a practical Composer/SSH workflow, I’m immediately less interested.
One-click installation solves the easiest five minutes of owning a Drupal website.
You’re choosing hosting for the next few years.
Shared Hosting vs Managed Drupal Hosting
Cheap shared hosting can run a small Drupal website.
That doesn’t automatically make it a bad choice.
Suppose you’re creating:
- a small community website
- a hobby project
- a school club website

Shared hosting may be perfectly adequate.
The problems usually appear as the website gets more complicated.
You may eventually need:

Unlimited websites.
Unlimited bandwidth.

I don’t care very much about those marketing claims when evaluating Drupal hosting.
Here is what I care about instead.
1. PHP Resources
Drupal can become memory hungry, especially when running Composer operations or complex modules.
A host that severely restricts PHP memory or CPU can make Drupal administration miserable.
2. Database Performance
Drupal makes heavy use of its database.
Slow database performance can result in a slow website even when the server has plenty of storage.
3. Redis or Similar Caching
For larger projects, Redis can improve caching and reduce database load.
It isn’t mandatory for every Drupal website, but having the option matters.
4. Staging Environments
Never underestimate staging.
Being able to update modules and test changes away from production is one of those features you don’t appreciate until an update destroys your live website.
5. Backups You Can Actually Restore
“Daily backups” sounds nice.
I want to know:
- How long are they retained?
- Can I restore one myself?
- Does the backup include files and database?
- Can I create a manual backup before an update?
- Is there an off-site copy?
A backup that takes three support tickets and two days to restore isn’t a very good backup.
6. SSH, Git, Composer and Drush
For a professional Drupal development workflow, these should be standard.
7. A CDN
If your audience is geographically distributed, a CDN can serve static content from locations closer to your visitors.
8. Security
I look for:
- SSL
- firewall protection
- malware monitoring
- DDoS protection
- software patching
- account-level 2FA
- isolated environments
Drupal itself is taken seriously when it comes to security, but good application security cannot compensate for badly managed infrastructure.
Does Faster Drupal Hosting Improve SEO?
Indirectly, yes.
Moving from terrible hosting to fast hosting can improve page-loading performance and user experience.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking:
expensive hosting = automatic Google rankings.
It doesn’t.
Hosting is part of the foundation.
You still need:
- useful original content
- sensible site architecture
- internal links
- crawlable pages
- good metadata
- quality backlinks
- optimized images
- mobile usability
- a sensible caching strategy
A fast empty page isn’t more useful than a slow empty page.
Don’t Choose Hosting Based Only on TTFB Tests
You’ll sometimes see hosting reviews where somebody installs a blank CMS and declares a winner because one server responded 80 milliseconds faster.
That is interesting, but limited.
Real Drupal sites aren’t blank.

If your website is small, don’t overbuy.
If your website makes money or supports an important organization, don’t underbuy either.
For most serious Drupal projects, Pantheon would be my first place to look.
For enterprise organizations, Acquia deserves a place at the top of the shortlist.

The cheapest server is rarely the cheapest option after you include developer time, downtime and troubleshooting.
